Hymns, Spirituals & Gospels – Qawwali
An evening of Afro-American sacred songs and Sufi devotional music
The devotional music of two different cultures – Afro - American Gospel and spirituals, and Sufi Qawwali - meet and cross - over on stage.
Taking part in this musical dialogue between Black religious music and the Eastern mystic tradition are the composer, historian and singer Bernice Johnson Reagon, appearing with her Sacred Sound Ensemble, and Faiz Ali Faiz, the biggest name in Qawwali music today who made his Athens debut last year as part of the festival’s World Sounds section. Sharing a common ancestry but also a boundless energy which verges on the transcendental or ecstatic, the musicians infuse the audience with a soul surge that goes beyond words, sending them with their instinctual cries on a journey fuelled by their whole bodies and by the power of their sound. Which means that the audience does so much more than eavesdrop on history: they get to hear what language cannot describe.
A portion of the ticket revenues will be donated to the charity ActionAid.
