The award-winning French conductor, Pascal Rophé, the exemplary Athens State Orchestra and four distinguished performers present a programme of works from the Hungarian and Russian national schools. The Dances of Galánta (1933) are based on popular tunes Kodály heard as a child in his village. The Concerto for two pianos and percussion (1940) is a dialogue between two instruments Bartók preferred as a child, while Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an exhibition (1874) honour the painter, Viktor Hartmann. At the keyboard, the international soloist and artistic director of the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, George-Emmanuel Lazaridis, and the award-winning ‘experimenter’, Stefanos Thomopoulos. On percussion, the virtuosic Dimitris Desyllas and a rising star, Andreas Farmakis.
