Athens State Orchestra – Vassilis Christopoulos

Tribute to Gustav Mahler

The Athens State Orchestra is bringing Gustav Mahler’s monumental Second Symphony to the Athens Festival in one of a series of concerts marking the centenary of the composer’s death.

Written for a large orchestra, two soloists and a mixed choir, the “Resurrection” Symphony, as it is known after the ode of that name which is included in its stirring finale, provides a moving musical response to the existential angst of the mortal man in search of the divine. On the podium, the Athens State Orchestra’s new artistic director and principal conductor, Vassilis Christopoulos.
