MIES JULIE

Written and Directed by Yaël Farber

Based on Miss Julie by August Strindberg

The Athens Festival introduces its audience to a remarkable South African theatre group who arrive with a compelling performance. Strindberg’s controversial work (1888) brings to the stage, as if in a ritual of conflict, the clash between the two sexes, two social classes, and two inner worlds. In the pagan euphoria of a midsummer’s night the servant leads the count’s daughter to her destruction—“with the brutality of the slave and the indifference of the master.” What experiences, memories, images and feelings will the will Yael Farber deploy in her adaptation; exploring the relentless game of power and seduction, perpetrator and victim that is played out between the white woman, Julie, and the black man, John?
