Armonia Atenea - The Friends of Music Orchestra

Carmina Burana
by Carl Orff

Camerata (Armonia Atenea - The Friends of Music Orchestra) performs one of the best known symphonic-choral works of the 20th century under the baton of the award-winning conductor, George Petrou.

Carmina Burana, the much loved cantata by the German composer and music educator Carl Orff (1895-1982) was written in 1935 for large orchestral and choral ensembles and three soloists.

Since then, the songs have entranced audiences around the world with the magnificence of their conception, the earthy and direct nature of the music, their magnificent choral sections and impressive vocal solos. The work is based on medieval poems of the 12th and 13th century. Written by monks, the verses were discovered in a manuscript in 1803 in a Benedictine monastery in Benediktbeuern, Bavaria

Carl Orff wrote settings for 24 of the poems, which speak of the role of Fortune in human life, the coming and the joys of spring, the manic pursuit of secular entertainments and, often profanely, of the joys of physical love.
