The Suppliants
by Aeschylus

Intent on avoiding an incestuous marriage with the sons of Egypt, the Danaids flee to Argos along with their father and seek asylum there. The King of Argos, Pelasgus, is faced with a dilemma: if he accepts the women, he knows it will mean war with Egypt; if he turns the suppliants away, he will have to face the wrath of Zeus. In the end, he invites the people of his city to assemble and decide the matter for themselves.
In this, his first ever directorial attempt, Christos Stergioglou stages The Suppliants (463 BC) with a young cast indoors at Peiraios 260 with the Chorus serving as collective protagonist at the epicentre of the action.
