De KOE Theatre Co – Peter van den Eede

Offending the Audience

The De KOE collective from Belgium believes that Peter Handke’s Offending the Audience is as relevant today as it was when written in 1966. It certainly retains the ability to shock the audience. Not that the actors emerge unscathed, given that the Austrian playwright stripped this, his first assault on the theatre, of every social and theatrical illusion and convention. Peter van den Eede’s adaptation and direction have transformed a nasty, hard and hectoring work into a production brimming over with energy, imagination and humour.
