Pope Joan – In search of Emanuel Roidis’ heroine

Following six successful performances of last year’s work in progress, Dimitris Mavrikios returns this summer with a fuller version of Pope Joan. The performance is based on a text that interweaves elements from the banned 1866 novel of the same title but also from Roidis’ life with his mother. For the director, the gripping story of Cornelia’s life seems to have furnished Roidis with material for the legendary mediaeval popess, a woman who succeeded in climbing her way up to the highest office of the Catholic Church.
