In his centenary year, Olivier Messiaen (1908 – 1992), mystic, pioneer, teacher and one of the most important composers of his turbulent century, seems at once timeless and timely. The Ensemble intercontemporain, the brainchild of Pierre Boulez, Messiaen’s favourite pupil, is making its second appearance at the Athens Festival, under the baton of Finland’s Susanna Mälkki and with Greece’s own Dimitris Vassilakis on piano. Des canyons aux étoiles... [“From the canyons to the stars...”] is a magnificent fresco, a meditative rendering of cosmological and theological themes: from America’s imposing canyons, the score gradually ascends to the stars in the heavens, encountering birdsong (so dear to the bird-loving Messiaen) along the way [Kh.G.].
