It was to Shakespeare that Verdi turned at the end of his creative life. Othello, the titular protagonist of this tale of passion and violence, is a brave black soldier who has risen through sheer talent to the rank of general in the army of a superpower. However, insecure about his lowly beginnings, he is easily manipulated by cunning rivals who drive him to self-destruction. Verdi’s music conveys Othello’s heroism, Iago’s jealousy and Desdemona’s gullibility with a rare economy of means, conjuring up with terrifying power the storm that rages out at sea and in Othello’s soul.
