The Dark Ages
Documentary theatre

Dark Ages is the second part (Civil Wars was the first) of the European trilogy by the award-winning Swiss director Milo Rau. The trilogy tackles the subject of war. In this production, Milo Rau examines the recent history of wars in Eastern Europe and the Balkans, focusing on the personal narratives of people who lived through the events.

Four actors from Bosnia, Serbia, Germany and Russia tell their stories on stage and to the camera, their faces projected onto a big screen. Their moving life stories intersect with historical events and questions as they talk of war, uprooting, flight and new beginnings. While the first part of the trilogy refers to Western Europe, Dark Ages relates to the Eastern part of the continent, 20 years after the Srebrenica massacre and 70 since the end of World War Two with a focus on the more recent history of violence in the Balkans. The production’s music was written by Laibach, the cult band from Slovenia, who have been singing about the relationship between art and ideology for decades.
