Panagiotis Vellianitis

ATLAS Project
Interactive audio-visual installation

The composer Panayiotis Velianitis creates a simulation of the firmament, bringing the constellations within reach and inviting us to ‘touch’ them. But every time our reflection flickers across the stars, they produce music composed around sound documents: everything from the voice of Lenin to Maria Callas and Bach’s second Brandenburg concerto to the din of bombardments in Syria. Perched at the heart of this perpetually changing soundscape, a unique bird with a unique call: the gionis or scops owl, whose monotonous ‘song’ reminds us that nature exists beyond human 'noise’. A social experiment is underway. The participants orchestrate the super-narrative of the world beneath the stars through their movements. Just as the mythic titan Atlas bore the celestial dome, so we bear our History with us everywhere we go.
A mobile telescope outside the installation allows visitors to gaze at the stars of the summer sky, while a series of talks on Astrophysics by specialists from the National Observatory of Athens provide background to the project.
