Schaubühne – Thomas Ostermeier

Henrik Ibsen, The enemy of the people

Ethical accountability or financial self-interest? Transparency or concealment of the truth? Dr. Stockmann, a conscientious man of science, is the first to propose that his community could become a model spa town, but when he discovers that the spa waters have been contaminated, he makes his findings public without hesitation. Confronted by the mayor, who is also his brother, and faced with the selfish attitudes of his fellow citizens, he becomes “an enemy of the people”.

By combining bold directorial decisions and excellent production values with a sensitivity for social issues, Thomas Ostermeier and the distinguished Schaubühne theatre company put a contemporary spin on questions posed by Ibsen 130 years ago.

In German with Greek surtitles.
