Suzhou Kun Opera Theatre of Jiangsu Province

The Peony Pavilion
Based on the play of Tang Xianzu

A young woman dreams about a mysterious, handsome young man, for whom she develops an intense longing. Thus, begins the extraordinary love story of The Peony Pavilion, a masterpiece of Kun Opera, based on the classic 16th-century play by Tang Xianzu. In the second part of the story, the young Liu Mengmei, on his way to imperial examinations, drops by the abandoned Du family home where he sees a portrait of the lovely, but tragically deceased Du Liniang and falls in love with her. Subsequently, Liniang appears to him in a dream and bids him to do something slightly bizarre. We are then plunged into Liu Mengmei's search for Du Liniang's father amidst a period of national crisis and rebellion in this breathtaking story. Established in 1956, the Suzhou Kun Opera Theatre of Jiangsu Province has performed both Kun Opera and Su Opera. In 2001, the Opera adopted its current name. For the past sixty years, it has promoted the revival of Kun Opera.
