Thanos Mikroutsikos has had a foot in two worlds right from the start: On the one hand, classical music, mathematics and symphonic compositions; on the other, the elemental, intuitive milieu that fed into his popular works – including his legendary zeibekiko, the dance of the Greek urban ‘blues’. It’s this second persona that’s on display in the Herodeion tonight. Four of Mikroutsikos’ regular collaborators are here for the occasion –
Manolis Mitsias,
Yiannis Kotsiras,
Dimitris Basis,
Rita Antonopoulou – and two are absent: the performer most closely associated with his popular music, Dimitris Mitropanos, and the poet whose work he turned to most often of all, Alkis Alkaios. This production links popular sentiment with the political engagement that is such a core feature of Mikroutsikos’ compositions.
