The New Riga Theatre – Alvis Hermanis

Sonja by Tatyana Tolstaya

This brilliant, poignant performance is the work of Alvis Hermanis, a Latvian director of international recognition who has collaborated with major theatres throughout Europe. His artistic approach combines the bare aesthetics of the German school and the playful, robust acting of the Russian.

In this play by Tatyana Tolstaya (of the illustrious Tolstoy family), a male actor interprets the role of the lonely heroine in a space that brings to mind the 1940s. The adorable Sonja deals with the burden of existence and the vicissitudes of everyday life with a positive outlook, waiting for her prince to come: a hymn glorifying the great unsung heroes and heroines who live next door.

In Russian with Greek surtitles.
