La dispute
by Marivaux

One of the key plays in the global theatre repertoire, La dispute by Marivaux (1744) is considered a masterly ‘play within a play’. It deals with Man’s constant struggle to control Nature and outdo the divine. Seeking to discover which of the two genders is most prone to infidelity, a royal couple conducts an experiment: four young people—two boys and two girls—who has been brought up in complete isolation are let out for the first time; their every move is being carefully monitored by the prince and his fiancée, but the subjects do not know it. In a labyrinthine garden, their spontaneity comes into conflict with the dictates of civilization and the experiment/performance is interrupted when its orchestrators prove unwilling to accept the truths it reveals.
