Rodrigo García
4
The Argentinian director and dramatist Rodrigo García returns to the Athens Festival with 4, a production named for the number of actors in it.
In 4, human figures, animals, words, objects, pictures, lights, music, dance and video co-exist in an on-stage universe in which viewers are bombarded by bizarre images: four actors walking slowly wrapped in a spider’s web, a game of tennis being played against Courbet’s famous painting Origins of the world, a samurai telling two childlike top models stories from his childhood in Buenos Aires; naked bodies sliding past on an outsize bar of Marseille soap...
In Rodrigo García’s larger-than- life theatre, the stage is inundated by stuff and by words. In their monologues, the actors seem to be vomiting up trivial, mundane events. The text is produced and consumed in the form of formulaic conversations, while the actors occasionally address the audience or incite audience members to take part in the action.
Employing humour and irony and drawing on his generation’s popular culture for material, Rodrigo García invites us to surrender to his tender yet terrifying world—and without so much as a filter for protection.
