Stories of Dimitris Hatzis

Anna Kokkinou brings the work of the novelist Dimitris Hatzis (1913-1981) to life on stage. Taken together, the four short stories and two novels included – using extracts from several of his essays (including The Face of Modern Hellenism) as connective tissue – form a monumental mural depicting 20th-century Greek history and the interplay of two of its primordial aspects: the epic and the tragedy. Hatzis grapples with the collective and personal fate of modern Hellenism, the emergence of the seed of intellectual hope and its historical survival in relation to the need for a Modern Greek Enlightenment.

His characters epitomize modern Greek stereotypes; like a tragic epic told simply and without bombast and fixations, they are echoes of two different worlds, one of which is soon to be superseded by the other.
